In spite of actions taken by some states in America to hinder access to abortion, an increasing number of US citizens are defending the right of women to choose abortion. This support is much greater and more profound than it was two years ago; this was discovered by a novel Harris Interactive/ HealthDay Poll.

Approximately one in every four of the people that polled in the year 2009 demonstrated their support for the notion that women should be able to abort their pregnancies in any and all circumstances. This figure has since increased to 36 % in the year 2011, this is the greatest support shown towards women's right to abort since the year 1985.

As a direct result of this, the figures of US citizens opposed to abortion decreased from 21 % in the year 2009 to 17 % this year.

The poll showed demographics which were markedly similar to those of the year 2009, but the study conducted this year was performed online exclusively.

A senior vice president for the healthcare research at Harris Interactive, Jennifer Colamonico says that in spite of the present trends towards 'fiscal conservatism' within America originating from the economies recession, US citizens are still socially moderate when it comes to their views on abortion rights. Harris Interactive was responsible for the internet based survey of almost two thousand and four hundred adults at the start of the month of July.

The results of this poll arrived at the same time that moves were being made by certain American states to hinder women's access to abortion. These actions made by those states included the formation of legislations outlawing insurance coverage for women seeking abortion in the health insurance companies; this was a part of the previous year's federal health care reformation. Some of the requirements stated that any and all women who were intending to get an abortion should first submit to ultrasound check ups; additionally downsizing of public funding for Planned Parenthood was also part of the reform. Already, some American states including Kansas, Iowa, North Carolina and Iowa have implemented the actions proposed in the new reforms; this information was obtained from reports that have been publicly made available.

This poll was inclusive of over two thousand three hundred and sixty two adults older than 18 years of age that took part in an online survey during the period from six july to eight july in the year 2011. This survey was conducted by Harris Interactive, which is among the world's premier custom market research companies, in collaboration with HealthDay another leading syndicator and producer of health related news and information.
